I was listening to a podcast the other day that said that humans are likely to die in the next 100 years or so, since global warming will kill our plants so we will have to fight each other for food and farmland.

      I hope this isn’t true!

With pollution, consumption of resources, or nuclear disasters, humans as a species could disappear in the next few thousands years. If we survive until we reach nuclear fusion energy, then we might survive a lot longer. The planet will be destroyed in about 5 billion years when the Sun dies.

I don’t think humans will ever truly be wiped out. Even if a huge asteroid collision happened tomorrow, I’m sure there would be enough people (and plants) left to continue the human race. Remember, even at the very start of homo sapiens a hundred thousand years ago, there were only a few thousand humans on the planet. They spread and multiplied and became the 7 billion population we have now.

As long as we have colonised another solar system by the time the Sun blows up in 5 billion years, we’ll be alright.
