In UK the level of funding in science is quite high compared with most countries in the world. There could always be more funding. But at least there should be no cuts. That is why is important to keep promoting science to the general public and the politicians. Science outreach is key to a continued good funding of science.
Primary investigators are always applying for more money and on the hunt for new grants in order to conduct more experiments and sequencing more individuals. Having said this, I think that compared to some others research field genomics is pretty well funded.
The UK government has recognised the importance of science for the long-term growth of the economy and the well-being of its citizens. As such, for the last few years, the science funding hasn’t been cut, like a lot of other things. However funding has not risen, either, to match the rate of inflation. This means money itself has gotten less valuable, so the budgets we’ve been getting haven’t been able to buy as much. Since a lot of science involves the building of big, expensive, one-of-a-kind machines (e.g. particle accelerators, fusion reactors, space-ships…), we really could do with more money to build those things quicker.
