I get paid pretty well – enough to support my family and pay the mortgage, anyway! Because I work at a government-funded national laboratory, I don’t get paid as much as I would if I worked at a privately-owned commercial company, but there are other benefits than just money. For example I get lots of days off every year and can work quite flexible hours (I can start and end whenever I like, within reason). There’s also a good pension and lots of training opportunities. Finally, I get to travel a lot so have seen many exciting places in the world! Some jobs pay more money but are a lot more stressful and limited than mine 😀

I am still a student so I do not get paid “that much” but it is enough to pay rent!

As a postdoc, after taxes I am left with 2,000£. The salary is pretty standard and fixed by the government. It can not be negociated.
