Factors and conditions that can cause blood clots, as well as serious conditions that are associated with blood clots once they form and travel to other parts of your body, include for example being over 60 years old, being overweight or obese and having had a blood clot before.

If your veins or arteries spring a leak, platelets in your blood rush to block the hole so you don’t lose too much blood. It’s like a bunch of people all trying to go through a door at the same time: it causes a blockage! Sometimes too many platelets try to join the party and they start to clog up the whole vein. Imagine you’ve got a long, narrow corridor with lots of rooms coming off it. If lots of people suddenly try to go into one room, they block up the rest of the corridor for anyone trying to get past into a different room! This is a blood clot and it can be dangerous.
