The atom was not split last year. It was split about one hundred years ago. In 1911 more precisely. By Rutherford, who showed experimentally there is a nucleus inside the atom.

Year 2016 started already with a historical discovery: gravitational waves. They were predicted by Einstein one hundred years ago! Their effects are very tiny. Today we have the technology to detect them. They are very useful not only because they confirm the beautiful theory of general relativity from Einstein, but they also bring information to our planet of black holes colliding at very very far distances in the Universe, and long long time in the past.

We expect many discoveries in science in this new year, thanks to better computers, and apparatus. Clearly it’s a great period to be a scientist. You can study science and be a scientist too!
