      Eh eh! Good question Pughy!

Some scientists claimed to have cracked the riddle of whether the chicken or the egg came first. The answer, they say, is the chicken. Researchers found that the formation of egg shells relies on a protein found only in a chicken’s body. Therefore, an egg can exist only if it has been inside a chicken.
The truth is that nobodies really knows…

Hello Pughy, I’d make an argument based on evolution and say that the (chicken) egg came first and was laid by an animal which was almost – but not quite – a chicken!

There was a questions about this today in the chat session. They came at the same time, of course. Initially life was just one cell, which divided into two cells. In time organisms became multi cellular and they started laying some other cells (eggs). This was long before birds, of course! So the egg and the animal that lay eggs started to exist at the same time.

It looks like you have already had 3 different answers from 3 different scientists! I’m going to cast the deciding vote and say the egg! (for the exact reasons Scott said)
